Signal and power on board: what a group can count on

Updated 28 October 2026

Zada Ulla and Zada Nara list local Wi-Fi, with no speed promised. Mobile signal drops between stops and is absent at many sites, so tell the office before you sail. Charge everything before boat day and bring a power bank.

What signal to expect between stops

Plan for gaps. Zada Ulla and Zada Nara list local Wi-Fi; on Zada Zen and Zada Mega it is confirmed in writing before you pay. Wherever it is aboard, we promise no speed and no coverage, so the Wi-Fi is a convenience and not a working link.

Mobile coverage is the other half. Telkomsel is reported to have the best coverage in Labuan Bajo and offshore, and XL is a weaker backup. Signal is patchy on boats, absent at many sites, and sometimes available at Padar and Komodo Island. That is a general impression, not a measured map, and we do not turn it into a promise.

SIM cards are registered with a passport for foreign visitors, and an eSIM can be installed before flying and activated on landing. The shops at the airport reportedly charge more than town outlets, so a team that wants data should buy before the trip or in town, and not in the arrivals hall. Prices change, and we do not quote them.

The practical answer for a working offsite is simple. Use the town, the harbour and the hotel for calls, expect messages to arrive in bursts on the water, and do not schedule a video meeting from the boat. A short call from a quiet bay may work, and a long one will not; the boat moves from stop to stop, and each stop has its own signal. If a decision has to be taken during the trip, agree it with the office beforehand, so that the answer needs one message and not a thread.

Charging, sockets and the power bank rule

Zada Ulla, Zada Nara, Zada Zen and Zada Mega list 24-hour electricity, and the number of sockets per cabin is confirmed in writing.

The mains in Indonesia are 230 V and 50 Hz, with plug types C and F, which are two round pins. A guest from a country with other plugs needs an adaptor, and a multi-way adaptor lets two colleagues in a shared cabin charge at once.

The rule for the team is: charge every device the evening before, carry a power bank of about 10,000 mAh or more, and keep the phone for photographs on the climbs. If the team brings cameras, count the batteries: a battery charged in the cabin the night before is ready for the Padar sunrise, and a flat one at the top of the ridge is the commonest regret on this trip. A group of 28 charging phones, cameras and drone batteries in the evening will compete for the same few points, so stagger it by cabin, and charge camera batteries first. A drone needs a park permit, which is arranged on request.

Telling the office before you sail

The office will ask what the group's reachability is. Give it a one-line answer: the group is on the water for the stated days, signal is intermittent, one named person ashore holds the group's emergency contacts, and the producer on our file is reachable in chat hours, every day, 08:00 to 20:00 WITA. Send the office the same page the team receives, a week before sailing, so that nobody learns on day two that the manager cannot be reached.

Producer's checklist for the working team:

  • an out-of-office message with the return date and a named contact
  • files downloaded before boarding, not during the trip
  • the PIC's mobile number, shared with the office and the hotel
  • the boat's local Wi-Fi treated as a bonus on Zada Ulla and Zada Nara
  • a printed rooming list and run-of-show in the PIC's bag, not on a phone
  • a shared photo folder agreed in advance, so that uploads wait until the group is back in range

A trip that must stay reachable all day is a poor fit for a boat. If that is your brief, say so, and we suggest a shorter charter or a land day on either side.

FAQ

Is there Wi-Fi on the boat?

Zada Ulla and Zada Nara list local Wi-Fi, with no speed promised; on Zada Zen and Zada Mega it is confirmed in writing. Mobile signal is patchy between stops.

Can we work on board?

For short tasks, yes, on Zada Ulla or Zada Nara; for video meetings, no. Signal is intermittent and no speed is promised. Download files before boarding and treat the water days as offline.

Where can I charge my phone?

All four boats list 24-hour electricity. Charge devices the evening before and bring a power bank, because sockets are shared.
