Kelor for a group: the shortest hill on the route

Updated 28 October 2026

Kelor is a small hilly islet about an hour by boat from Labuan Bajo, with a short, steep climb of 15 to 30 minutes to a viewpoint over the bay. It is the first stop of the sample 1D route and of day one on the longer routes, and it makes a good warm-up for a group.

A short hill for the first morning

Kelor is the first stop for a group leaving Labuan Bajo, because the island sits about an hour away: the leg runs 50 to 70 minutes. The climb to the viewpoint takes 15 to 30 minutes and is rated moderate, since the path is steep and dry, and a group of mixed ages strings out along it, so the first walker up waits at the top until the last has arrived and caught breath. The bay opens out. A first group photograph belongs here.

It is not a dragon site. It is not a long trek. Teams who expect either will find a hill and a view, which is the right size for the first morning of a trip that has longer walks ahead of it.

On the sample 1D day Kelor is the hill walk and swim. On the 2D1N, 3D2N, 4D3N and 5D4N it opens day one, with the Menjerite snorkel and the Kalong sunset after it.

Warm-up before the longer days

A team that meets on the boat for the first time uses Kelor as a warm-up. The climb is short enough that nobody is left behind, steep enough that the group needs to wait for each other, and it ends in a swim. That mix is why the team-building page uses it as a first shared task.

For the 1D charter, Kelor is the walking part of the sample day, and the Menjerite snorkel stop the water part. Heat decides the timing, and the captain moves the stop if the sun is high. Kelor comes first on every Zada route, so the briefing the evening before should already say that the day starts with a hill.

What to wear

Shoes with grip are the one item that matters: the path is steep and dry and slippery for smooth soles. Add a hat, water and a swimsuit under the clothes, because the swim follows the climb.

Tell the team on the briefing page that the day starts with a hill. A guest who learns this on the morning arrives in sandals. The climb is short, but the path is steep, and loose ground under a smooth sole slows the whole group. Sunscreen goes on before the boat leaves the harbour, since the walk starts within the hour. Phones stay in a pocket on the way up; the view is the reward, and the photograph can wait for the top.
